Fortnite’s Chapter 6 Season 1, which launched late last year, was widely praised for its Japan-inspired aesthetic and a slew of exciting crossovers. But now, as we move into Chapter 6 Season 2, titled “Lawless,” we’re headed in a radically different direction. This new season is set in a crime-ridden metropolis known as… Crime City.
In an unexpected move, Fortnite has released the full set of battle pass skins ahead of time, and frankly, this one’s a letdown. It’s probably one of the weakest passes I’ve seen in a while, unless there are some hidden alternate styles that could redeem it.
The lineup, which you can view above (or click for a larger version), features a new gangster-inspired Midas, a dill pickle rapper who’s been heavily featured in the marketing, and, of course, Sub Zero from Mortal Kombat, who is said to be joined by Scorpion later in the season.
In terms of design, this pass doesn’t do it for me—except for one character. The “Wolf” character, wearing a full cap, looks pretty cool, but the female skins are downright generic. In an era where Fortnite’s original skins are at their peak, these feel like the bland, basic level-one skins we used to get that were later upgraded as you leveled up. At best, these skins will likely get some alternate styles, but right now, they seem uninspired.
As for the new Midas skin, I think there are better versions of the character out there, but this gangster take is arguably the second-best in the pass. Sub Zero, on the other hand, just doesn’t hit the mark. The skin is an incredibly basic, stripped-down version of the character. It doesn’t stand out as one of Fortnite’s best crossovers, and while he might have some cool ice effects, I’m not particularly impressed. Maybe he’ll get some modernized styles later, but as it stands, this one falls flat.
Compared to the Japan-inspired crossovers of Season 1, I’m left wondering what the connection is between Mortal Kombat and this crime theme. There’s speculation that Fortnite could eventually pull off a Grand Theft Auto collaboration, especially with GTA 6 releasing later this year, but I’m not holding my breath.
Overall, fans don’t seem too excited about the “Lawless” theme. It revolves around vaults and stealing things again—something we’ve done quite a few times before. It’s not that the game is about to lose its player base, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that this seasonal preview just doesn’t have the same spark. We’ll see how it plays out when the season launches next week.
