Rainbow Six 3/BA (Original Xbox Version) - Online Play Tutorial 2017

Xbox Lives On!

Requirements:

  • Original Xbox or Xbox 360 console

  • PC (must have ethernet port) with Windows OS Vista and up, 32 bit Linux OS, or 32 bit (64 bit might be okay) OS X

  • At least one RJ45 ethernet cable

  • A copy of the game

Please note that this tutorial is applicable to all Original Xbox games.

TL;DR you will be playing via lan tunneling. XLink Kai is a lan tunneling program (similar to Tunngle/Gameranger) for consoles. The program captures packets coming from your console and forwards them to the consoles of other players, simulating a global LAN.

XLink Kai can be downloaded from Team XLink's official website - https://teamxlink.co.uk

Winpcap, which is required, is included with the installer. You will also need to make a user account to play on Kai. I recommend using a gmail address to activate it.

Setup:

If you choose to connect your console directly to your router, your computer will need to be hard wired to it with an ethernet cable. If you are using an Xbox 360, then you will likely also need to connect it with an ethernet cable, as opposed to wifi. Alternatively, you can connect your console directly to your computer with a cable, and then access the internet on your computer via wifi, or a second ethernet cable if you have a second ethernet adapter in it. You may also need to configure ICS, or bridge the network adapter your console is connected to with the one giving your computer internet access, if you go this route.

It should end up looking something like one of these two

If your router supports UPnP port forwarding, make sure it is enabled. If it doesn't, you will need to manually open a port for Kai. There is no default port set with the latest version, but the former broadcasted on 30000 for player to player communication. https://portforward.com/ will be able to generate for you a step by step tutorial to doing this. Select your router model, and select XLink Kai.

Playing the game:

Once you're set up, navigate to the system link menu of your game and search. If all goes well, Kai will tell you that your console is detected in the metrics screen (diagnostics mode in classic UI).

Navigate to the Rainbow Six 3 arena. If there are people currently playing, it will pop up in a black highlight as soon as you enter arena mode.

Games will appear in the system link menu as such

FAQ:

'What is the player population like?'

Sadly, the player population is relatively dead. Terrorist hunt matches are played usually at least once per month. Team Survival is played less frequently... but the interest is there, so that can easily change with more people.

'What is the lag like?'

It's about the same as it was back on the official servers. Try to match up to players with low ping times to you to reduce it.

'Can't detect games'

Make sure to let Kai through any firewalls you may have, and check that it is using an open port.

'Is there a discord server I can join?'

There is no discord server exclusively for Rainbow Six 3 but there is one I run for general Original Xbox gaming - https://discord.gg/9Mbsjkq

These 2 games were such an amazing mom experience. I would love to see some devs port the scopes and maps over to the PC version. How many people play using this method? I miss this game

It's still fairly dead but we're trying to organise more. Join us this Saturday if you want for classic RS3 (No DLC).
